Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery
Fellowship Program

Seoul National University offers advanced training through fellowship
programs in three otolaryngology subspecialties.

We provide faulty assignments to graduates of recognized otolaryngology residencies to
help them prepare for teaching. As a clinical instructor in one of our fellowship programs,
you will receive training in your chosen specialism while concurrently serving as a junior
surgeon member and educate young residents.

Otology Fellowship in Department of Otorhinolaryngology
Training goals and work guidelines : Seoul National University Hospital

Qualification

An Otolaryngologist who has completed a course of otorhinolaryngology specialty and has obtained the qualification of an otolaryngologist and wants in-depth training in the field of otology

Goal for training

  1. To become professors specializing in otology with a competence as educators.
  2. To design and conduct basic research in otology independently.
  3. To get ability to operate an independent clinic and perform surgeries with knowledge of otology and neurological diseases.

Training contents

In order to achieve the training goals, the following training contents are carried out.

Education

They attend an academic meeting in the hospital, make a presentation, or guide the presentation of residents. They actively attend and participate in domestic and international academic conferences related to otorhinolaryngology.

  • Otology conference (once a week)
  • CI meeting (once a month)
  • Hereditary hearing loss meeting (once a month)
  • Hearing test / vestibular function test room meeting (once a month)
  • Facial nerve meeting (once a month)
  • Hearing rehabilitation expert meeting (once in 2 months)
  • Otology grand round (once in 3 months)
  • Other meetings related to otorhinolaryngology

We aim to make presentation as the first author at least twice at domestic conferences and at least one at international conferences.

Research

They develop clinical research skills and the ability to conduct basic research. During the training, they come up with ideas for clinical research and analyze data to develop their ability as clinical researchers. We aim to conduct clinical and basic research and publish more than two SCI-level papers.

Clinic

  1. They can attend professor’s clinics and build practical knowledge. They can participate in decision-making in outpatient clinic, hospitalization and emergency surgery.
  2. Assist and perform the following surgery.
  • Tympanoplasty
  • Tympanomastoidectomy
  • Ossiculoplasty
  • Subtotal petrosectomy
  • Facial nerve decompression
  • Stapes surgery
  • Cochlear implant (including cases with inner ear anomaly)
  • Canaloplasty
  • Acoustic neuroma surgery
  • Other skull base surgery
  • Vestibular surgery
  • Surgery for pulsatile tinnitus

Rhinology Fellowship in Department of Otorhinolaryngology
Training goals and work guidelines: Seoul National University Hospital

Training objectives :

  1. Acquire knowledge and skills to independently practice as a rhinologist
  2. Educate residents and medical school students in the field of rhinology
  3. Acquire skills to conduct basic and clinical research

Clinical Practice

Acquire knowledge and skills to independently practice as a rhinologist

  • Perform and assist in surgeries
  • Understand clinical exams and test methods used in the field of rhinology and perform them
Milestone
  • Assist/Perform part of :
    • Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (ESS)
    • Septoturbinoplasty
  • Assist in :
    • Skull base surgery
    • Rhinoplasty
    • Sleep surgery
  • Able to review Polysomnography data

Research

Acquire skills to conduct basic and clinical research

  • Suggest ideas for clinical research and discuss with professors
  • Collect data, make analyses and present the results
  • Actively participate in rhinology subspecialty research meetings
  • Actively participate in conferences
  • Read up-to-date papers published in the field of rhinology
Milestone
  • Participate in lab meetings
  • Present more than 2 research thesis in conferences and write papers
  • Select research thesis and prepare research plan

Education

Actively attend and participate in domestic and international academic conferences related to otorhinolaryngology.

  • Rhinology conference (once a week)

  • Tumor board/Radiology conference (once a week)
  • Friday conference (once in a week)

Head and Neck Fellowship in Department of Otorhinolaryngology
Training goals and work guidelines : Seoul National University Hospital

Qualification

A person who has completed the course of otolaryngology major and has obtained the qualification of otolaryngology specialist and wants in-depth training in the field of head and neck area.

Goals

  1. To become a professor specializing in head and neck with the personality as a educator
  2. To independently design and conduct basic research in head and neck area
  3. To operate an independent clinic and perform surgery by having systematic knowledge about head and neck and laryngeal diseases

Program

Education

  1. Utilize various media to acquire clinical skills and knowledge about basic research by themselves
  2. Guide residents and students
  3. Participate in conferences
    • Case/Topic/Journal Conference (weekly)
    • Head and neck rounding (weekly)
    • Tumor board (weekly)
    • Radiology conference (weekly)
    • Pathology conference (every other week)
    • Thyroid conference (weekly)
  4. Actively participate in domestic and international conferences and present research results as the 1st author

Research

  1. Cultivate abilities to conduct clinical and basic research
  2. Submit manuscripts to SCI(E) papers

Clinical practice

  1. Participate in clinical practice of professors and build practical knowledge
  2. Management of emergency and hospitalized patients by taking necessary measures such as decision-making and performing procedures
  3. Perform and assist the following surgery
    • i. Incision and drainage of deep neck infection
    • ii. Excisional biopsy of lymph node
    • iii. Neck mass excision (other than lymph node)
    • iv. Laryngomicrosurgery
    • v. Intraoral stone removal
    • vi. Submandibular gland resection
    • vii. Thyroidectomy
    • viii. Partial parotidectomy
  4. Improve skills by assisting and observing the following surgery.
    • i. Neck dissection
    • ii. Total laryngectomy
    • iii. Hypopharyngectomy
    • iv. Maxillectomy
    • v. Mandibulectomy
    • vi. Total parotidectomy
    • vii. Local flap reconstruction
    • viii. Free flap reconstruction
